Interview with Dr. Zahoor Khan, Chief Operating Officer

Hi Dr. Khan! So, we believe you have relocated your whole family to take the position at The New Foscote Hospital. Can you tell us what attracted you to the role and the area?

My wife and I are expecting our second child soon and were looking to move out of London, so when Professor Shakib got in touch about the role I didn’t have to think too long and hard about it.  Oxfordshire is a beautiful county and a perfect place to raise a family. In terms of the job, it’s an exciting time at the hospital and I felt it was a role that was aligned with my experience and one where I could have an immediate impact.

The hospital has undergone quite the transformation, can you tell us a little more about that?

The hospital has undergone an incredible transformation over the last six months. This was overseen by the Medical Director, Professor Shakib, who has made huge investment into the facilities. The hospital now boasts a new day case recovery suite, laser room and inceased imaging facilities, including MRI. Not only has he refurbished the building, but he has also transformed how the hospital is run. Our vision is to become one of the leading private healthcare providers in the region. We pride ourselves on high quality patient- centred care with a personal touch that you don’t always get at the bigger hospitals.

As well as being the Chief Operating Officer, you also run a Private GP service at the hospital. Demand for Private GPs has increased dramatically over the last few years; why do you think this is?

I think that the main driver for this is access to appointments – waiting times for NHS GPs are around 3 weeks, sometimes longer. When you combine this with the busy working lives most of us have – private GPs offer a convenient and reassuring option.

What other services do you offer at the hospital?

We provide a wide range of specialties, from Cardiology to Cosmetic and Reconstructive surgery.  All of our Consultants are leaders in their field and provide the highest quality of care.

You have previously worked in healthcare in the United Arab Emirates and New Zealand; having been involved in the business of healthcare abroad, is there anything you think we in the UK could learn from other countries?

I spent nearly four years in Abu Dhabi and one year in New Zealand.  What I learnt from my time overseas is that Medical Care in the UK is amongst the most highly regarded in the world and the benchmark to which most other countries aspire. Having said that there is no such thing as a perfect health system and there is always room to improve.
