Dr Rama Vancheeswaran is an experienced and highly respected Consultant in Respiratory Medicine, with over 25 years of expertise in diagnosing and treating a broad range of respiratory and lung conditions. Her clinical interests span chronic cough, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiolitis, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease (ILD), pulmonary embolism (PE), lung cancer, sleep-related breathing disorders, and a wide variety of respiratory infections, including post-COVID complications. Dr Vancheeswaran is committed to delivering personalised care, ensuring that every patient receives a tailored and holistic treatment plan built around their individual needs.
Dr Vancheeswaran has a strong academic background, having completed her postgraduate training at several of London’s most prestigious teaching hospitals, including the Royal Brompton, St Mary’s, and Hammersmith. She holds a Master’s degree in Immunology from Brunel University and a PhD from the Royal Free, Royal Brompton and Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology in partnership with University College London. Her doctoral research, conducted under Professor Dame Carol Black, focused on the immunopathogenesis of scleroderma and fibrosing alveolitis. She has gone on to publish extensively on these and related subjects, with over 100 research papers and conference presentations to her name.
In addition to her clinical and academic contributions, Dr Vancheeswaran has played a key role in respiratory medicine leadership and training. She has served as the Director of Research at West Hertfordshire Hospitals, where she led major projects on ILD, cancer, asthma, COPD, and the impact of COVID-19. She was previously ILD and COPD lead at the Royal Free Hospital (Barnet), and has held an honorary consultant position at the Royal Brompton Hospital’s Interstitial Lung Disease unit. She has also trained a large number of junior doctors, respiratory trainees, and allied health professionals throughout her career.
Her dedication to patient care and innovation has been recognised through multiple awards, including the Health Service Journal (HSJ) Award for Lung Cancer in 2015, the BMJ Award for Respiratory Team of the Year in 2021 (as team lead), and the BAME Clinical Champion of the Year Award in 2021. She has been involved with national organisations such as the British Thoracic Society’s Specialist Advisory Group on COPD and was appointed a patient ambassador by Asthma + Lung UK (formerly the British Lung Foundation). A frequent national speaker, Dr Vancheeswaran lectures across the UK at events hosted by the British Thoracic Society, Royal College of Physicians, Primary Care Cardiology Society, and other key organisations.
