Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a common nerve condition that affects the hand and wrist, causing pain, numbness, and tingling. At The New Foscote Hospital, we offer rapid access to specialist assessment, diagnostics, and treatment to relieve symptoms and restore function.

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel—a narrow passageway in the wrist. This compression can lead to various sensory and motor symptoms in the hand and fingers.

Common Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Patients with CTS may experience:

  • Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, middle, or ring fingers
  • Pain or discomfort in the wrist or hand, often worse at night
  • Weak grip strength or difficulty holding small objects
  • Hand clumsiness or dropping items frequently
  • Burning or aching sensations extending up the forearm

Causes & Risk Factors

Several factors can increase your risk of developing CTS:

  • Repetitive hand movements (e.g. typing, manual work)
  • Pregnancy or hormonal changes
  • Wrist injuries or arthritis
  • Underlying health conditions like diabetes or hypothyroidism
  • Genetics – narrower carpal tunnel anatomy may be inherited

Diagnosis at The New Foscote Hospital

Our specialist orthopaedic consultants and neurologists will assess your symptoms and may recommend:

  • Ultrasound or MRI imaging (if needed)
  • Clinical examination
  • Nerve conduction studies (NCS)

Treatment Options

Treatment will depend on the severity of your condition:

Conservative Treatments:

  • Wrist splinting (especially at night)
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Corticosteroid injections
  • Activity modification

Surgical Treatment:

  • Carpal tunnel release surgery – performed to relieve pressure on the median nerve, typically as a day case procedure with a short recovery time.
