Cataracts

A consultant tests a patient's vision

Cataracts are one of the most common causes of vision impairment, particularly as we age. At The New Foscote Hospital in Banbury, our consultant-led ophthalmology team provides expert diagnosis, tailored treatment plans, and advanced surgical options to help restore clear vision and improve quality of life.

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts occur when the normally clear lens inside your eye becomes cloudy, leading to a gradual decline in vision. This condition is most often age-related but can also develop due to injury, medical conditions like diabetes, or prolonged use of certain medications.

Cataracts typically affect both eyes, though not always at the same rate. The cloudiness prevents light from passing clearly through to the retina, causing blurry or dull vision.

Common Symptoms

Cataracts can develop slowly and may not be immediately noticeable. As they progress, you may experience:

  • Blurred, cloudy, or dim vision
  • Sensitivity to light or glare
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Faded colours or a yellowish tint
  • Halos around lights
  • Frequent changes in glasses prescription
  • Double vision in one eye

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, an eye examination with one of our consultants can help determine the cause.

Causes and Risk Factors

Cataracts most commonly occur due to the natural ageing process, but several factors can increase your risk:

  • Advancing age
  • Eye injuries or trauma
  • Diabetes or other health conditions
  • Long-term steroid use
  • Excessive exposure to sunlight (UV radiation)
  • Smoking and alcohol use
  • Family history of cataracts

Treatment Options

In the early stages, cataracts can be managed with stronger glasses or better lighting. However, surgery is the only effective way to treat advanced cataracts. Our consultant-led team offers:

  • Standard Cataract Surgery – Removal of the cloudy lens and replacement with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL).
  • Advanced Lens Options – Including monofocal, multifocal, and toric lenses to suit your lifestyle and visual needs.
  • Laser-Assisted Surgery – For enhanced precision in selected cases.

Cataract surgery is typically a day case procedure under local anaesthetic with minimal downtime and excellent results.
