Total Hip Replacement

Overview

Total hip replacement (hip arthroplasty) is a surgical procedure that removes a worn-out hip joint and replaces it with a smooth, durable implant. It is recommended when hip pain, stiffness and loss of function no longer respond to physiotherapy, medication or injections. Modern implants and enhanced-recovery protocols now mean shorter hospital stays and faster return to normal life.

Conditions That May Lead to THR

  • Severe Osteoarthritis – the most common reason for surgery
  • Rheumatoid or Psoriatic Arthritis – inflammatory joint damage
  • Avascular Necrosis – loss of blood supply to the femoral head
  • Post-Traumatic Arthritis – after hip fractures or dislocation
  • Hip Dysplasia or Childhood Deformity – causing early cartilage wear
  • Failed Previous Hip Surgery – persistent pain after fixation or resurfacing

Key Symptoms Indicating You May Need Surgery

  • Persistent groin, buttock or thigh pain, even at rest or overnight
  • Morning stiffness or difficulty putting on shoes and socks
  • Limping, reduced walking distance or reliance on a stick
  • Pain that interferes with sleep, work or leisure activities
  • Little or no relief from painkillers, steroid injections or physiotherapy

Diagnosis at The New Foscote Hospital

  • Consultant Orthopaedic Assessment – detailed history and examination
  • On-Site Imaging – digital X-ray and, if required, MRI/CT scans
  • Tailored Treatment Plan – conservative measures first; surgery when appropriate
