Trigger Finger

At The New Foscote Hospital, we offer expert care for trigger finger, a common hand condition that can affect your ability to straighten or bend your fingers normally. Our orthopaedic and hand specialists deliver accurate diagnosis, personalised treatment, and long-term relief in a comfortable private setting.

What is Trigger Finger?

Trigger finger, or stenosing tenosynovitis, is a condition where one of your fingers or thumbs becomes stuck in a bent position, then suddenly straightens with a snap—like pulling and releasing a trigger. It occurs when inflammation narrows the sheath surrounding the tendon in the affected finger.

Common Symptoms of Trigger Finger

You may be experiencing trigger finger if you notice:

  • Finger stiffness, especially in the morning
  • Clicking or popping sensation when moving the finger
  • Tenderness or pain at the base of the affected finger or thumb
  • Finger locking in a bent position, which may suddenly pop straight
  • Lump or nodule at the base of the finger
  • Difficulty gripping or using your hand for tasks

What Causes Trigger Finger?

Trigger finger is often caused by repetitive hand use or gripping activities, and may be associated with:

  • Diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Occupational strain (e.g. manual work, typing, or instrument use)
  • Previous hand injuries
  • Gender and age – more common in women aged 40–60

When to Seek Treatment

Trigger finger can worsen over time if left untreated. Seek medical attention if:

  • Symptoms persist or worsen
  • The finger locks and cannot straighten
  • Pain interferes with your daily activities

Diagnosis and Treatment at The New Foscote Hospital

Our orthopaedic team will perform a physical examination and may recommend:

Non-Surgical Treatments

  • Splinting to rest the affected finger
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Steroid injections to reduce tendon inflammation

Surgical Treatment

If non-surgical methods don’t work, trigger finger release surgery may be recommended. This is a minor outpatient procedure to free the tendon and restore smooth movement.
