Dr Martin Hirsch is a Consultant Gynaecologist and Endometriosis specialist based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. He is a full-time gynaecological surgeon with particular expertise in advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery and the excision of endometriosis.
Dr Hirsch was awarded a postgraduate Medical Doctorate (MD) from Queen Mary University of London for research into the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis. He has an extensive academic portfolio with more than 40 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and invited lectures, including work on endometriosis and fertility preservation.
His work has received national recognition from NHS Improvement, British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE) and Health Education England. He also runs specialist endometriosis clinics and performs complex laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures for a wide range of benign gynaecological conditions including fibroids, pelvic pain and ovarian cysts.
Dr Hirsch is actively involved in advancing care for endometriosis nationally and internationally, serving as a senior council member of the BSGE and chair of its thoracic endometriosis working party.
Research & Teaching
Dr Hirsch has a strong academic and teaching portfolio focused on improving the diagnosis and management of endometriosis and other benign gynaecological conditions. He was awarded a Doctorate in Medicine (MD) from Queen Mary University of London for his research investigating the diagnosis and management of endometriosis. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and international guideline contributions, including research on endometriosis surgery, fertility preservation, adenomyosis and women’s health outcomes.
He is a regular invited speaker at national and international meetings, including the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy, the European Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, presenting on advanced endometriosis surgery and related topics.
Dr Hirsch is also actively involved in medical education. He is an NHS Educational Supervisor and RCOG-accredited educator, and teaches undergraduate medical students at the University of Oxford, where he coordinates teaching on menstrual disorders within the clinical curriculum. He has contributed to multiple surgical training courses and has supervised medical students undertaking research degrees in women’s health.
