Mr Alvand graduated in medicine from the University of London, in 2001. He also holds a PhD from the University of Oxford, on improving training methods for unicompartmental knee replacement surgery and completed his orthopaedic training in Oxford.
His time in the city included two sub-specialist clinical fellowships, focusing on complex hip and knee surgery. He was appointed to the prestigious post of NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford and as Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer.
A European Travelling Fellowship at the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia followed, based on peri-prosthetic joint infection. Soon after, Mr Alvand was admittted to the GMC’s Specialist Register in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.
Mr Alvand’s work in supporting patients focuses entirely on knee surgery. He is one of the highest volume revision knee surgeons in England and has particular expertise in unicompartmental knee replacement, along with prosthetic joint infection.
The knowledge and experience Mr Alvand brings to knee surgery is of great benefit to his patients, as is his wish to treat them with individual care.
Research & Teaching
Mr Alvand’s research is centred on improving clinical outcomes in unicompartmental knee replacement, revision knee surgery and peri-prosthetic joint infection.
He has published over 50 peer reviewed articles and regularly presents at national, or international conferences. He was the invited faculty member of the International Consensus Group for the management of peri-prosthetic joint infection.
Mr Alvand serves on other national, key working groups in his field, with the aim of improving care delivery and outcomes for patients.
