Mr Wiberg a plastic and reconstructive surgeon with a special interest in peripheral nerve surgery. He works in both the NHS and private sector as well as undertaking research.
His interest in migraine surgery stems from his academic interest in the biology of compressed and irritated nerves. His DPhil (PhD) thesis at Oxford was on the genetic basis of carpal tunnel syndrome (nerve compression in the wrist). Mr Wiberg and Prof Furniss were the first to discover genes that predispose people to carpal tunnel syndrome, and they were struck by the many similarities between the treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome and the surgical treatment of migraine headaches. Their subsequent research has uncovered certain genetic similarities between migraine and carpal tunnel syndrome, which explains why people with one of the conditions is more likely to develop the other. He has travelled widely to learn migraine surgery techniques from leading international experts in the USA, Germany, and Italy. Mr Wiberg was motivated to bring this surgery to the UK after meeting migraine patients and listening to how migraine surgery had profoundly improved their lives.
Mr Wiberg studied medicine at Oxford University, where he graduated top of his year in the Medical Sciences BA degree. After completing his surgical training, he undertook further specialist training in nerve surgery at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital’s Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit, the largest national referral centre for complex nerve injuries, and also at the Cleveland Clinic, London.
Mr Wiberg lives in Oxford with his wife and two sons. He is a College Tutor in Human Anatomy at Merton College, Oxford, where he was a student many years ago, and made it to the grand final of the televised rounds of University Challenge before losing to the better team!
