Prof. Furniss is a Plastic Surgeon with a special interest in migraine, the science of nerve compression, hand surgery, and Iymphoedema. He works in both the NHS and private sector.
He has always been interested in migraines, being a sufferer of migraines since childhood. He has led research into the shared genetic basis of migraines and other nerve compression, such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Nerve decompression is an integral Part of surgical practice. He has worked hard with his colleagues in this area in order to deliver the highest quality, most innovative migraine surgical care to the UK.
Prof Fumniss also heads a research group at Oxford University. He has written many research papers, book chapters, and lectures regularly at both national and international conferences. He did his medical training at Cambridge and Oxford Universities, and has worked in various hospitals within London and abroad in Coimbatore and Tokyo.
Prof Furniss is married with three sons and has lived in Oxford for over 20 years, but his heart still pines for Sheffield, and in particular Bramall Lane!
Research
Professor Furniss holds the Chair of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Oxford. Through extensive collaborations, his research spans genetic and environmental causes of surgical disease, aiming to discover novel therapies and refine current treatments.
