Professor Sharma studied medicine at London University, graduating in 1988. He also holds two doctorates, a PhD from Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge and a Doctorate in Medicine from London University.
His international studies include a Fulbright Scholarship, at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. A diploma in the history of medicine, from the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries adds to Professor Sharma’s unique knowledge.
He joined the GMC’s Specialist Register in 2003, taking up posts which have seen him support patients through that knowledge. At facilities such as The New Foscote Hospital, or others which mix clinical and academic life.
Professor Pankaj Sharma is a Consultant Neurologist at Imperial College London and Professor of Neurology at the Royal Holloway College, University of London, where he is a director of the renowned Institute of Cardiovascular Research.
He has served as a Department of Health Senior Fellow, as head of acute stroke services at London hospitals and head of Imperial College Cerebrovascular Research Unit. His work supports a national stroke charity but above all, helps those he treats.
Professor Sharma may be at the pinnacle of his profession but nothing is as important to him as the patients he sees, offering them exceptional care.
Research & Teaching
Professor Sharma served as Editor-in-Chief of the Royal Society of Medicine Cardiovascular Disease journal. His research interests include the genetics of stroke, for which he has established a large international biobank of stroke, from the UK, India and Middle East.
He served as a British Heart Foundation Clinician Scientist at Cambridge and is the author of over 100 original papers, along with co-editing two books.
Professor Sharma’s has offered expert input on media channels, such as the BBC and CNN, along with advising government bodies. The contribution he makes to his profession is however equally valued, by colleagues across the globe.
