Before the Procedure
You will be given clear instructions to prepare:
- Fasting: Typically required for several hours before the procedure.
- Medication review: Some medications, including blood thinners, may need to be adjusted.
- Blood clot prevention: A transoesophageal echocardiogram (TOE) may be arranged beforehand to ensure no clots are present in the heart.
Your doctor will ensure all risks are explained and any questions are answered beforehand.
What Happens During DC Cardioversion?
- Sedation: You’ll receive short-acting sedation so you remain asleep and comfortable throughout.
- Electrode placement: Patches are placed on the chest (and sometimes back) to deliver the electrical shock.
- Cardioversion: A low-energy shock is delivered in sync with your heartbeat to restore normal rhythm.
- Monitoring: Your heart rhythm, blood pressure, and oxygen levels are monitored before and after the procedure.
The entire process usually takes less than 30 minutes, with recovery in the clinic afterward.
Aftercare and Recovery
- You’ll rest in a recovery area until the sedation wears off (usually within an hour).
- It’s important to arrange for someone to take you home and avoid driving or major decisions for 24 hours.
- You may be prescribed ongoing medication to help maintain a normal rhythm or prevent clots.
- A follow-up appointment will ensure your treatment plan continues to support your heart health.
Is DC Cardioversion Safe?
Yes – when performed by experienced clinicians in a controlled setting, DC Cardioversion is a low-risk procedure. Rare complications may include skin irritation at the electrode site, a brief drop in blood pressure, or recurrence of abnormal rhythm.
